What is Needle Roller?
Needle rollers are the load-carrying component of the bearing, and are the one common component of all needle roller bearing types. These allow the outer and inner rings to rotate almost friction-free. They are most frequently manufactured from a steel alloy.
Needle rollers are the load-carrying component of the bearing, and are the one common component of all needle roller bearing types. These allow the outer and inner rings to rotate almost friction-free. They are most frequently manufactured from a steel alloy.
Raceways (if present) serve to guide the rollers within the bearing. While the inner and outer rings are designed to fit closely, a necessary minimal amount of clearance is required to account for thermal expansion and other variances. These items are commonly manufactured from carbon chromium steel or other alloys to improve hardness, fatigue resistance, and dimensional stability.
Bearing cages separate rollers to keep the load evenly distributed around the bearing. They also reduce bearing noise, improve rolling conditions, and prevent sliding. Additionally, they contain rollers within a single assembly. Steel is the most commonly used cage material in needle roller bearings. Plastic cages can be used where operating conditions permit. Lubrication and surface treatments can reduce the amount of heat generated from friction. Some drawn cup needle roller bearings are designed without a cage, and contain a full complement of needle rollers. Full complement bearings combine maximum load carrying capacity with the low cost of a drawn cup bearing. An inward turned lip is used to retain the rollers in the bearing ring in this design. Testing has established the following coefficient of friction values for caged and full complement bearing designs:
Seals (if present) isolate the rollers, cage, and lubricant from contaminants and moisture in harsh environments. Seals must be able to withstand the oxidation, heat, and chemicals to which the bearing may be exposed. Sealed bearings will often supply an inner ring access hole in the outer ring, so the bearing can be relubricated. Seals are highly reliable when friction between the seal and bearing or shaft is kept to a minimum. Additional surface treatments or lubrication can be used to reduce this friction. Bearings with integral seals are limited to relatively low rotational speeds compared to open bearings. Seals are commonly made of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, polyurethane, or fluororubber.
Lubrication is required for all needle roller bearings. Annular grooves and a lubrication hole are may be incorporated into the outer ring of most heavy-duty, machined needle roller bearings raceways to help the lubricant proliferate the circumference of the bearing.
Synthetic oils are most common for quality bearings. Mineral oils are appropriate for high-speed use. Synthetic oils are good for moderate to high speeds. Petroleum exhibits good lubrication under heavy-load/high-speed conditions. Silicone oils offer good heat resistance and do not corrode rubber, but are more appropriate for low speeds. Oils can be dripped, centrifuged, or impregnated into bearings.
Greases are best for moderate to high rotation speeds. Typically, the high-speed torque of a greased bearing is lower than an oiled bearing, but the opposite is true at lower speeds. These are usually applied via grease pack, but grease plating is also available. Silicone greases offer good heat resistance and do not corrode rubber, but are best for low to moderate speed applications.
Dry films should only be used where 'wet' lubricants will prove unsuitable or will accumulate large amounts of dirt. Dry films are difficult to apply and produce wear flakes as the bearing rotates, possibly obstructing bearing operation. Non-contact seals rely on the gap control between rotating and non-rotating components. The gap can be positioned radially, axially, or a combination of the two. Greases may be placed within this gap to reduce contaminant permeability. Since there is no contact between components, there is no friction which must be accounted for in the seal's implementation. Non-contact seals are preferred for high RPMs. The most common type of non-contact seal is a labyrinth seal, and many on these seals are constructed of steel or another rigid metal.
Needle Roller Bearings Advantages Explained
Low Maintenance
Most needle roller bearings don't require daily, weekly, or even monthly maintenance. However, they do need to be kept adequately lubricated. This means choosing the right type of lubricant and ensuring that the proper amount of lubricant covers the rolling elements (needles) of the bearing.
Exceptional Axial & Radial Load Capacity
Industrial needle bearings can also withstand high axial and radial loads. This differentiates them from ball bearings, which are typically reserved for applications where high axial and radial load requirements aren't as necessary.
Excellent Rigidity
Rigidity refers to a material's ability to maintain its shape and not deform, bend, or break when a high external force is applied. Industrial needle roller bearings have excellent rigidity, and even a small amount of elastic deformation on a needle roller bearing won't typically affect its operation. Using rigid bearings in tight-fitting applications with high axial and radial loads helps to protect mating surfaces and adjacent parts from friction and excessive wear.
Great for High-Speed Applications
Ball bearings generate lower amounts of centrifugal force during high-speed applications. This increases friction, leading to the ball bearing overheating and eventually breaking. Comparatively, needle roller bearings generate a higher centrifugal force with high rotational speeds because the needles are longer and weigh more than the balls in ball bearings. Needle roller bearings also generate high rotation and won't overheat at high speeds, which makes them ideal for high-temperature applications.
Low Coefficient of Friction
Friction occurs when a given material or surface encounters resistance when sliding, moving, or rubbing against another. The coefficient of friction refers to the ratio of friction between the two materials relative to the normal force that would otherwise keep them together.
Exceptional Mechanical Properties
Lastly, mechanical properties vary based on the material the bearing is made of. However, for the most part, manufacturers will heat treat a needle bearing to improve its mechanical properties. Heat treatments can increase a bearing's strength, durability, hardness, ductility, elasticity, and wear resistance.
The Basics of Needle Roller Bearings
Needle bearings are a small cylindrical type of roller bearings which are used to prevent friction between moving surfaces which have low rotational speeds. Needle roller bearings are usually used when space is at a premium as needle bearings are much more compact than ball bearings. According to Marks' Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers ,quoted on Wikipedia "A Needle Bearing is a roller bearing with rollers whose length are at least four times their diameter".
The high speeds which needle roller bearings can operate at means that they are usually lubricated with grease or oil and depending on the demands of the application, high-speeds or heavy loads may mean that the bearings would need regular coats of lubrication. As needle bearings can reach such high speeds, the retainers are vital to prevent any friction between the needles and they help to make the needles more stable.
Although there are a wide range of designs available for needle bearings, the typical bearing features an inner race and outer race, a cage which contains the needle rollers and the actual needle rollers. In some cases needle bearings can be used without an inner race or outer race or either as the needle rollers in the bearings can operate alone. For needle rollers to be effective, the hardness, accuracy and finish of the shaft needs to have exactly the same qualities as the bearing races.
Due to the small size of needle roller bearings and the high speeds they are able to rotate at, they are used in compact mechanisms such as gear boxes, for example in an average car the drive shaft will usually have eight or more needle bearings in it. Other uses for these bearings include small appliances, robotics, air craft control, farm equipment and construction equipment.
